Most students think of the SAT as two sections: Math and Reading & Writing. But inside each section, College Board measures something more specific — eight distinct skill areas that each appear as a separate line in your official score report.
This breakdown matters more than most students realize. A score of 580 in Math tells you very little on its own. But knowing that your Algebra subscale is strong while your Problem Solving & Data Analysis score is dragging everything down? That's actionable. That tells you exactly where to spend your study time.
Here's a complete guide to all eight SAT skill areas — what each one tests, how many questions it carries, and what it actually takes to improve in each.
Why Skill Areas Matter More Than Section Scores
Your SAT score report includes subscale scores for each skill area, typically reported on a scale of 1–15. These subscales are more useful than your overall Math or Reading & Writing score because they reveal where you're losing points, not just how many you're losing.
The most efficient study strategy is almost never "review everything equally." It's to identify your two or three weakest skill areas and direct your practice there. A student who improves a weak area by two subscale points will typically see a 20–40 point gain on that section — far more return per hour of study than polishing an area that's already strong.
With that in mind, here's what each of the eight areas actually tests.
Math Skill Areas (4 Total)
1. Algebra
Question count: ~13–15 questions Share of Math section: ~35%
Algebra is the single largest skill area on the SAT Math section. It covers linear equations and inequalities, systems of linear equations, and linear functions — the kind of problems where you're solving for x, finding where two lines intersect, or modeling a real-world situation with a linear equation.
What trips students up most is translating word problems into equations. The math itself is rarely complicated; it's reading a scenario about cell phone plans or ticket prices and setting up the right equation that loses people. Practice this translation step explicitly — read a problem, write the equation before solving anything, then check your setup against the answer.
Students who score poorly on Algebra often haven't practiced enough with systems of equations (especially elimination method) or with inequalities that involve negative coefficients and sign flips.
2. Advanced Math
Question count: ~13–15 questions Share of Math section: ~35%
Advanced Math covers everything above linear: quadratic equations and functions, polynomial expressions, exponential functions and equations, and rational expressions. This is where the algebra gets more complex — factoring, the quadratic formula, completing the square, and working with function notation.
The College Board's name for this area ("Advanced Math") makes it sound harder than it often is. Many of these problems follow predictable patterns. Factoring quadratics appears in almost every test, and students who drill this skill specifically often pick up 2–3 questions they were previously missing.
The most commonly missed Advanced Math questions involve function composition (e.g., what is f(g(x))?) and interpreting graphs of nonlinear functions. Both are worth dedicated practice sessions.
3. Problem Solving & Data Analysis
Question count: ~5–7 questions Share of Math section: ~15%
This skill area is the most "real-world" of the four. It covers ratios, rates, proportions, percentages, unit conversions, and basic statistics — the math of everyday life. It also includes interpreting charts, graphs, and tables, and basic probability.
Problem Solving & Data Analysis questions often look simple but contain subtle traps around unit conversions and percentage changes. "A 20% increase followed by a 20% decrease" does not return you to the original value — questions like that appear regularly.
Students who are strong in Algebra and Advanced Math sometimes score poorly here because they underestimate it and rush. Slow down on these questions. Read the axis labels on any graph before trying to answer anything.
4. Geometry & Trigonometry
Question count: ~5–7 questions Share of Math section: ~15%
The SAT tests a relatively limited set of geometry concepts: area and volume formulas (which are provided in the test reference sheet), properties of triangles and circles, coordinate geometry, and right-triangle trigonometry (sine, cosine, tangent, and basic trig identities).
Because the question count is lower, many students deprioritize this area — but that's a mistake if geometry is genuinely weak, since each question carries significant weight. The two highest-value topics to review are similar triangles (which appear frequently in both pure geometry and word problems) and the unit circle for trigonometry questions.
Reading & Writing Skill Areas (4 Total)
5. Information & Ideas
Question count: ~12–14 questions Share of R&W section: ~26%
Information & Ideas questions ask you to read a passage and identify its main idea, locate specific evidence, draw an inference, or identify what a piece of data (a chart, graph, or study result embedded in the passage) does or doesn't support.
These are the most "reading comprehension"-style questions on the SAT. Strong readers often find them straightforward, but students who read quickly without fully processing can miss inference questions by choosing answers that are technically supported by the passage but don't answer the specific question asked.
The most reliable strategy: answer in your own words before looking at the choices. Form your own answer to the question, then find the choice that matches it. This prevents you from being drawn toward plausible-sounding distractors.
6. Craft & Structure
Question count: ~13–15 questions Share of R&W section: ~28%
Craft & Structure is the largest Reading & Writing skill area. It covers vocabulary in context (what does this word mean as used in this passage?), text structure and purpose (why did the author include this detail?), and cross-text analysis (how do two passages relate to each other?).
The vocabulary questions on the digital SAT are not about obscure words — they test whether you can identify the most precise word choice given the context. A question might ask whether "remarkable," "peculiar," "notable," or "famous" best fits a sentence, where all four are technically positive but only one captures the author's exact meaning.
Cross-text questions (comparing two short passages) are new to the digital format and trip up many students. Practice these specifically — they require holding both passages in mind simultaneously and identifying relationship types (agreement, disagreement, complement, etc.).
7. Expression of Ideas
Question count: ~8–12 questions Share of R&W section: ~20%
Expression of Ideas tests rhetorical effectiveness — editing and revising for clarity, focus, and cohesion. Questions ask you to choose the most effective transition between sentences, add or remove information to strengthen an argument, or reorder sentences to improve flow.
This area rewards students who read widely and have an intuitive feel for what good writing looks like. For students who don't, the skill can be developed by practicing with a simple rule: the best answer is almost always the most specific and concise one that serves the stated purpose.
Transition questions (choosing between "however," "therefore," "for example," etc.) are among the most frequently missed. Learn the logical relationships each transition signals, and check that the relationship it implies matches the actual relationship between the two sentences.
8. Standard English Conventions
Question count: ~11–15 questions Share of R&W section: ~26%
Standard English Conventions is the grammar and mechanics section. It covers sentence boundaries (comma splices, run-ons, fragments), punctuation (especially commas and semicolons), subject-verb agreement, pronoun agreement, verb tense consistency, and modifier placement.
This is the most rule-based of the eight skill areas, which makes it the most teachable. Students who invest time in learning a focused set of grammar rules — particularly around punctuation between independent clauses and subject-verb agreement across long phrases — often see rapid score improvements here.
A common mistake: students who "fix" grammar by ear (choosing whatever sounds right) often perform below their actual ability because spoken English doesn't follow written conventions. Learn the explicit rules rather than relying on intuition.
How to Find Your Weakest SAT Skill Areas
If you've already taken the SAT, your official score report from College Board includes a subscale score (1–15) for each of the eight areas. The lowest subscale is your starting point.
